Bioavailability of organically bound iodine.

چکیده
Total serum iodine levels were measured for 24 hr in human subjects following a single, oral, therapeutic dose of organically bound iodine administered as iodinated glycerol. In one volunteer, measurements were taken during continued dosing for 6 days and for 48 hr thereafter. Peak levels were attained 1-2 hr after administration of a single dose, with a gradual fall to almost basal levels by 24 hr. The experiment with continued dosing for 6 days indicated that once peak blood levels were reached, they continued at this concentration until the drug was discontinued; then they progressively dropped to pretreatment figures in about 48 hr. The bioavailability of the iodinated glycerol was demonstrated following aqueous solution, elixir, and tablet formulations. No significant effect on blood thyroxine iodine levels was noted. Keyphrases 0 Iodine, organically bound-bioavailability from iodinated glycerol as aqueous solution, elixir, and tablet formulations, humans Thyroxine-blood levels following administration of aqueous solution, elixir, and tablet formulations of iodinated glycerol, humans Bioavailability-iodine from iodinated glycerol formulated as aqueous solution, elixir, and tablet, humans Any ingested drug whose pharmacological activity is dependent upon reaching the circulating blood should be detectable in the circulation as a basic step in proving potential therapeutic efficacy. The purpose of the present study was to establish the bioavailability of organically bound iodine as iodinated glycerol1 when administered as a tablet or in liquid formulation, the latter as an elixir or aqueous solution.

Naturally occurring iodine in humic substances in drinking water in Denmark is bioavailable and determines population iodine intake.
Iodine intake is important for thyroid function. Iodine content of natural waters is high in some areas and occurs bound in humic substances. Tap water is a major dietary source but bioavailability of organically bound iodine may be impaired. The objective was to assess if naturally occurring iodine bound in humic substances is bioavailable. Tap water was collected at Randers and Skagen waterwo...
متن کاملThe synthesis of organically bound iodine by cell-free preparations of thyroid tissue.
The conversion in vitro of iodide ion to organically bound iodine by thyroid tissue was first demonstrated by Chaikoff and his coworkers. They showed that surviving thyroid slices are able to convert radioiodide ion (Im-) into thyroxine and its precursors monoiodotyrosine and diiodotyrosine (1, 2). Attempts to obtain the synthesis of organically bound iodine by homogenates of thyroid tissue fai...
متن کاملBioavailability of organically bound Fe to model phytoplankton of the Southern Ocean
Iron (Fe) is known to be mostly bound to organic ligands and to limit primary productivity in the Southern Ocean. It is thus important to investigate the bioavailability of organically bound Fe. In this study, we used four phytoplankton species of the Southern Ocean (Phaeocystis sp., Chaetoceros sp., Fragilariopsis kerguelensis and Thalassiosira antarctica Comber) to measure the influence of va...
متن کاملStudy on the effect of high calcium intake on serum protein bound iodine and urinary excretion of iodine
Iodine deficiency remains a major health problem in the world, including some parts of Iran. It has been recognized that there is usually a close and inverse relationship between iodine in the soil and water and presence of endemic goiter. Calcium has been suggested as one of goitrogens, though the definite role, extent and mechanism particularly in human have not been studied. Serum protein-...
متن کاملThe Localization of Organically Bound Iodine in the Endostyle of Amphioxus
Recent work has done much to strengthen, from a functional aspect, the classical view that the thyroid gland of vertebrates is homologous with the endostyle of the protochordates (Barrington & Franchi, 1956a), for the presence of organically bound· iodine has been detected in the latter organ, both in Ciona and in other ascidians (Barrington, 1957 and unpublished work) and in Amphioxus (Thomas,...
